End Chronic and Recurrent Bacterial Vaginosis

In today’s world, nothing really compares to life being lived to its fullest with no worries, no doubts, no problems. Every woman can honestly admit to themselves that one of the most important things to them is to stay beautiful, look vibrant, and especially to maintain their body clean and fresh. One of the most important considerations women care for is their vaginal sanitation.

Unfortunately, sudden changes may occur in a woman’s response to natural changes of their bodies. Even though a woman may practice good hygiene, along the way there may be some unforeseen circumstances. This is could be an infection, disease or bacteria build up.

Almost one third of women today are experiencing chronic or recurrent bacterial vaginosis (BV). BV is an infection caused by the imbalance build up of harmful bacteria outnumbering the good ones inside the vagina of woman. A woman may recognize having BV if she experiences:

  • Vaginal discharge with an unpleasant “fishy” odor, which can be more obnoxious after sexual intercourse
  • Grayish, yellowish or whitish discarghe
  • Vaginal itching
  • Burning sensation when urinating

The good news is there are treatments for recurrent bacterial vaginosis. Since in most cases it is a continual infection, doctors prescribe antibiotics. They may even give creams to apply inside the vagina or pills to be taken as oral meds.

More preferred, if you are a woman experiencing BV, and have been tired of the chronic effect antibiotics bring, you may consider trying natural home remedies. Most women have found them to be very effective. Most natural or home remedies include:

  • Inclusion of fresh intakes including fruits vegetables, grains, fresh water and fax seed
  • A warm bath added with a few drops of pure apple cider vinegar to relieve itching and inflammation
  • Avoiding too much sugar and caffeine intake
  • Natural ingestion of good bacteria like acidophilus
  • To promote healing, application of tea tree oil, golden seal and calendula on the vaginal surface
  • Garlic has natural antiseptics, so it can be taken in consideration
  • As much as possible, restrict using any perfumed products

There are many more home remedies you might try, including a step by step home remedy program that targets the root cause of BV from which 1000s of women have found relief. To review this home treatment program, Click Here. Bacterial vaginosis is not a permanent infection, it can be cured provided that women who experience this infection invest their time and effort to make things well. Natural remedies can prevent the continual occurrence of BV.

What I am confused about is that my doctor said I had “too much good bacteria”…so I dont know if this is truly BV. This is honestly killing my self esteem what with the excessive discharge (whitish), the smell/taste of lemons/sour/tangy…I’ve tried home remedies, Ive tried medications and nothing works. I cry about this all the time, I can’t seem to make it end and I cant find anyone else with the same problem.

  2. Mel on December 23rd, 2009 6:20 pm

I have had the same problem. I have symptoms of BV and have taken over 8 medications and I can’t get rid of it. I have eaten garlic and many other things. i know what you are going through, rachel.

  5. Vicky on January 25th, 2010 6:01 pm

I’ve been dealing with this for a full year now and the antibiotics worked but it came back every time. Recently the only thing that stops it (symptoms) is 4 (400mg) Folic acid & 2 garlic (400mg) vitamins. I hate the fact that if i stop taking it it comes back… but i rather do the vitamins and not have to deal with the embarrassing symptoms. If anyone else finds a way to get rid of this PLEASE post it on here!

I’ve been suffering from bv off and on for four years. Its awful and it seems nothing will cure it. I’ve spent uncountable amount of money on prescribed antibiotics and herbal remedies. I was bv free for almost a year it seemed to go away on its own but unfortunately its back. I had no idea so many women suffered from this ongoing problem.

  7. Sandy on April 16th, 2010 11:58 pm

What i want to know is if there is a way to cure my husband so i don’t get it anymore. my dr. said he was the cause of it and his dr’s cant find anything wrong with him hes faithful and honest and now is scared to be intimate with me because of it… i feel so bad..

I have suffered from BV for a few years, and I kind of sensed something was wrong down there but thought it was normal for a women to have the fishy smell and discharge. until my doctor called and said i had BV and prescribed Flagyl which worked within 2 days. I wanted home remedies so that i can continue to use, and started taking Probiotic ACIDOPHILUS supplements once a day (1Billion mcg) from walmart and the smell n dischargew is gone!!!! It has been almost a month now and i feel so happy and no longer ashamed of having sex. Now i can do it anytime anywhere!!! Try it…P.S i will keep updated!!!

I’ve been suffering from this I would say for the last 3 yrs.I can’t get rid of it!!!!! When the doctor gave ,me metridozole the first time around I thought I was done with it,But then it came back In about a month or two. Now I deal with this on a constant bases, It is ruining my sex life, I feel in some ways depressing me, I cry in the doctors office because I really don’t think they really care and with all the presciptions given to me I believe I should have been rid of this long ago, It just Makes no sense!!! I’ve been reading all sorts of posts and forms and this seems to be a very big problem, Many women are suffering from this with no relief.

  10. Amanda on December 4th, 2010 7:36 am

i am also suffering from BV. 3times in the last 6 months. i hate it, i am embarrassed, and its uncomfortable. do any of you suffering from this have the sensation of air bubbles in your vagina? i have another appointment in the AM i am hoping to cure it. my husband has been amazing in helping me deal with this, for that i am greatful, even though i am so embarrassed.

  11. jennifer on December 30th, 2010 9:32 am

I have had BV for years too, and I just thought I was the only one who had it for that long. I have tried the pills and it goes away for a few months and then its back. You can smell it through my pants at times, how embarrassing. I don’t know what to do.

  12. Misunderstood on February 6th, 2011 11:39 am

I’ve been struggling for about 2 yrs with this. I’m at a lost of what to do and SO tired of putting my feet in those damned stirrups! I feel ugly dirty and very confused. Over the years i’ve learned things that managed my symptoms but nothing to ever fully cure it. I’ve just finished a round of tindimax, which i told was the best to take, and that STILL didn’t resolve my BV problems. I feel as if im curse and will be stuck like this for the rest of my life. I’m tired of crying at night and feeling like i’ll never be normal or happy. I can’t talk to no one cause they think i obsess and i worry too much. But who the hell is gonna care if i don’t? I just don’t know anymore. I’m at the end of my ropes and just feel like giving up….

  13. Jessica on April 20th, 2011 6:56 am

I thought I was alone also..I can’t seem to get rid of it either. I was diagnosed with HPV about a year ago and I’ve been suffering from it on and off since then. I Google chronic BV and this lady Dr. Has this book she wrote about her problems she was having from it. She said for her, eating yogurt and eating 3 pods of garlic every day got rid of it. The garlic is an antifungal I guess. I’ve been trying to eat yogurt everyday and inserting that cream they prescribe and no matter what it keeps coming back. All my careless Dr can say is that its not going to go away. I can’t live like this. It’s affecting my boyfriend also. Sometimes I cry because I feel disgusting and hopeless. I can also smell it through my pants….somebody help us!!!!!!!

  14. Bobbi on May 18th, 2011 2:25 pm

Going on over 20 years dealing w/ BV. Tried countless prescriptions and home remedies. Depression and anxiety, no t a day goes by without thinking/ worrying about it. No spontaneous sex. The only thing that has brought any relief in the last few years, although can be a bit expensive and must be used consistently is a product you can get over the counter called RepHresh. Other brands as well, Luvena is one I’ve used. They are a vaginal/ lubricating gel, some w/ probiotics which help balance PH. My latest doctor says it’s just masking symptoms, I say I don’t care. I use it two to three times a week and as long as I’m consistent, keeps the odor and discharge at bay. First time in years I’ve had a somewhat normal sex life. I saw a show on TLC about women w/ allergic reactions to semen and thought perhaps that could be a contributor to the problem, but my Dr. Looked @ me like I was crazy. Sometimes it feels like people don’t understand the frusterations w/ chronic BV… Emotional & financial , and that you’re always searching for answers!!! Until recently, I thought I was the only one!

  15. Necey on June 24th, 2011 5:06 am

I thought I was the only one that has BV the way I do. I hate living like this. Its embrassing as hell. I just finished some all the meds thats supposed to make it go away but its back less than a week later. I’ve been dealing with this for 3 years now and it’s driving me insane.

  16. Shonda on July 31st, 2011 6:20 pm

I have been suffering with BV on and off for about 13 years now. I have truly tried EVERYTHING!!!!!!!! I only wear cotton underwear, I have tried numerous prescriptions to the tune of $180 just for my co-pay. I have tried yogurt, garlic, rephresh, probiotics, tea tree oil, treated my partner with prescriptions have used condoms, had an IUD inserted, had the IUD removed, NOTHING has worked!!!! I have gotten to a point where I don’t even try to treat it anymore. I constantly wear pantiliners and clean up before and after sex. My last hope is to purchase a book I saw online where a female who experienced chronic BV gives tips on how to get rid of it. The book is about $30 and comes with a money back guarantee. I wish I could go to a bookstore and purchase it rather than online. But $30 is still cheaper than the $35 co-pay I am charged everytime I see my OBGYN, not to mention the co-pays for prescriptions. I will check back after I get the book.

  17. Kira on August 24th, 2011 10:41 am

I have been dealing with this for about a year now. It seems to have started since I terminated a pregnancy but the doc says it isn’t related. I even recently went off the pill thinking that that was causing it. I didn’t have an infection for about 3 months…and today…again. Weird thing tho is I had NO symptoms, but then I went to the gym and jogged and stuff came out and now I have full symptoms…as if the jogging motion brought it on. This has caused absolute depression and anxiety and I’m SO tired of being told that they don’t know what’s causing it. My husband and I would like to try and have a baby soon but I hear BV causes miscarriage and/or low birth weight!! I def don’t wanna be on antibiotics while preggers. This whole thing stresses me out completely and although I’m glad I’m not alone, I’m frustrated there is so little research done on this!

  18. Crystal on August 26th, 2011 10:26 am

I have too experienced recurrent bv infections and have tried changing soaps, long term medication treatments and etc… However I remember being on a Phillips colon health probiotic pills and during that time everything was better besides my colon…duhhh…lol…but seriously a really good probiotic pill is the answer. I had tried Align for awhile but didn’t seem to work for the BV nor the colon and the whole time I was using Phillips Colon Health “Probiotic” pills which was a miracle for my chronic bowel problems,I was free of any vaginal infections which was such a relief. So please take it from someone who is has been abstinent for 3 years and has had recurrent bv infections during that time. I could not use yogurt bcuz I’m lactose intolerant and Hydrogen peroxide just irritated and altered the pH of the vagina leaving more problems.

  19. Lindsay on August 31st, 2011 6:45 am

I had a miscarriage 9 years ago and have been dealing with chronic BV ever since. Like most of you, I have tried everything and NOTHING works. Just like Shonda, i have basically stopped trying to treat it, because its hopeless. I have seen 9 different OB/GYNs..and no one has a clue. I have taken so much flagyl, that my body doesnt respond to it at all. the Rephresh product used to at least curb the symptoms for a few days, but now it doesnt help anymore either. i dont know what else to do and sometimes i feel my husband resents me..?

  20. precious on September 2nd, 2011 1:14 am

Ladies!!!! I am suffering from bv just like y’all and I’ve been reading that taking 4000 mg of vitamin 3D can cure it along with Probiotics!! Where I like don’t have this supplement so I have ordered it online and its on the way, I wanted to share what I know with u and I hope that god will help us all get rid of this stupid bv and live a normal life! Pls try vitamin D3 and put ur feedback.

  22. Autumn on September 6th, 2011 8:27 pm

I have not been to the doctor for this condition, but with enough research I have diagnosed myself with BV. It never goes away ladies. It smells worse for me right after my period, and it doesn’t go away until about 4 days before my period, so I have been dealing with this problem nearly every day of my life for the past 5 years. The only remedy that seems to work is 1:1 mixture of 3% antiseptic hydrogen peroxide and distilled water. Insert it into your vagina and hold it there as best as you can for 5 minutes (you must be laying down for it to work). You have to repeat this twice, and it only takes 10 minutes… it’s so worth it ladies! Remember to wash yourself out with distilled water each time you finish a cleanse. Do this remedy for 5 days straight. It will work. If you can, purchase probiotic vaginal inserts and do this RIGHT AFTER you complete the peroxide douche. You will do these once daily and use them until the entire package is gone. Lastly, start taking up to 1600 mcg of Folic acid a day, but split it up into four doses. After one week, reduce your intake to 800mcg a day (split into two doses). Ladies I promise you that if you try this you will be happy with the results. Quit wasting money on doctor visits, they are truly only making things worse.

  23. dawny on September 8th, 2011 7:56 am

i have it too and my doctor said she wants me to use metrogel every 3-4 days and im just like wtf flagyl dont work and leaves a nasty metallic taste in my mouth, metrogel or “the cream” as yall call it is just the cock block from hell, like what am i supposed to do just use metrogel all the time till it dont work anymore and never have sex because i have that stupid nasty cream oozing out of me all the time??? i dont think so.. there has got to be another way theres got to. that smell is just gross i mean if i was a dude i wouldnt touch me with a 10 foot pole smelling like a freakin fish market in 100 degree weather. i feel like im being punished

  24. dory on September 9th, 2011 4:55 pm

Hi its me again and sorry I mistyped the dose of vitamin D the 1st time, it’s 4000 iu not mg. So I finally received my vitamin d3 and started taking 2000 iu twice a day along with garlic pills, d-mannose powder 1 tsp, folic acid 800 mcg twice a day, to be honest the discharge decreased and the smell got better but I can’t judge right now I need to confirm after a month. Try the vitamin D3 and put ur feedback here.

  25. Amanda on September 9th, 2011 6:53 pm

Hey everyone, I have also been suffering from bv (obvi or I wouldn’t be posting). Anyway, I’ve had feminine issues my ENTIRE life. It all started around 12. I am now 27. As far as bv is concerned, I’ve only started having issues with it the past 2 years. For me, I have a lot of weird symptoms some of which I haven’t heard a lot of people mention but the oddest thing is that typically I do not have the odor or lots of dicharge. Most people including my dr at first, would say it’s not bv. But every damn time I come back positive for bv. I’ve been to the doctor atleast 10 times over the past 2 years. I have just recently switched doctors and hoping she will actually have some answers. I do know a few things so far from watching my diet and my activities. It’s always worse in the summer do to the heat. If I party on the weekends and stay up late and don’t get much sleep… I notice symptoms the next day. I manage it myself for the most part now. LOTS of water, activia and NO soda products. I refuse to take flagyl or any of the medication anymore because it doesn’t help. It always comes back a week later. The ONLY thing that seemed to work was a vaginal cream called terconazole. This is a cream that is prescribed for yeast infections.. not bv. But my last doctor, on a whim, decided to prescribe it to me anyway because she had heard it sometimes works for bv. It worked so well I had her write me a prescription so I could have it just in case i had issues when I went to Paris/Germany for 2 weeks. And thank God she did because it hit me hardcore mid trip. Which was due to lack of sleep and such. Oh, and like anything else… Cigarettes bother it A LOT. I don’t smoke every day but I’m a social smoker. Anyway, I don’t know if this help at all but I figured I’d share.

  26. Amanda on September 9th, 2011 7:09 pm

Oh! And if your man is uncircumcised?? Yeah, forget having sex without a condom if you have problems with bv. My ex wasn’t circumcised which led to a great deal of my feminin issues including bv. Just wanted to throw that out there.

  27. rainy on September 10th, 2011 11:53 am

hi ladies i know how you all feel i am a bv sufferer also had it for a few yrs. tried everything tea tree oil, garlic peroxide douches, pills, its so freakin embarrasing i stay depress i try not to get close to people because i know if i can smell it i know people can especially when they rub their noses .i will not give up thta: why i am on the computer looking up homopathic cures for bv.

  28. Angel on September 11th, 2011 7:54 pm

I have had it almost constant for the last year and a half no one has given me any answers and the meds dont work. i used to feel so alone and it really has me depressed, but after reading everyone’s testimonies i don’t feel so alone anymore. But my question is do any of you get pain during sex because of it and sometimes get lower abdominal pain? I don’t itch or anything I just get the terrible odor that is super embarrassing.

  29. Amanda on September 12th, 2011 7:29 pm

@ Angel, I sometimes do get pain during sex. I also have had a lot of abdominal pain associated with it. Like I stated previously, I’ve only had the odor a few times and yes, it is super embarrassing. You would think with as many women that suffer from this that they would have some sort of answer for it. I refuse to take the meds anymore because they only seem to make it worse.

  30. Amanda on September 12th, 2011 7:46 pm

Things I know (so far) that make it worse for me:

    – anything tomato based (this is the #1 thing for me)
    – citrus
    – alcohol
    – cigarretes
    – sodas

  31. rainy on September 14th, 2011 9:04 am

  33. Sasha on September 22nd, 2011 10:05 am

I have been suffering with BV for the last four years (I am 29 now). I suffered from yeast infections every month and now it has switched over to BV EVERY MONTH. I get it right after my period ends regardless if I have sex or not. I have gone to countless doctors and specialists and they all prescribe me metrodizonale. I went down to Mexico to get a case of it six months ago since I am sick of paying to go to the doctor. This month when I started taking it my stomach has been hurting so bad. I am not going to be taking it any longer. The things I have found that have helped me homeopathically in the past are: peroxide douche, parsley/cucumber/cilantro “green” juice, turmeric mixed into warm water and then swallowed, and putting a piece of garlic in me overnight. When I didn’t eat sugar it went away for three months. It is so hard not to eat sugar or drink alcohol because I feel like I earn it by working full time and going to school full time. My next option is to do a boric acid douche. I am going to go to my doctor and get this prescribed to me and I will definitely be telling you guys how it works. Doing a peroxide douche is also very successful for me, but I kind of “ghetto” rig it and would like a real prescribed douching system from the pharmacist this time around. I wish you all luck and I will report back with any successful findings *crosses fingers*.

  34. Angel on September 24th, 2011 5:25 am

Do you still take all of that daily or just to get rid of it?

  35. Cori on September 28th, 2011 9:45 am

Hormonal imbalances can cause chronic yeast infections/bv. The doctors I was seeing – gynecologists and family doctor kept prescribing antibiotics – it only got worse – never-ending cycle. Finally I was healed through a wholistic gynecologist who put me on a two-week regimen of Diflucan (yeast killer) along with being on a yeast-free diet for 2 weeks. I also took a pro-biotic daily that she prescribed. After the two weeks on Diflucan, she did a blood test to check my hormones and found out I was in premenopause which can cause yeast infections. She gave me a wholistic and natural estrogen cleanse since my estrogen levels were too high along with natural progesterone cream from Metagenics. I was completely healed. Praise God!

  36. Kristin on September 29th, 2011 6:20 am

Has anyone tried AVC cream and taking an antibiotic?

  37. Julia on September 30th, 2011 7:32 am

I also have Chronic BV usually once a month. I am also TTC. I have tried Flagyl and tindamax.which works temporaly until I have sex again. I have also tried colloidal silver and that seems to work sometimes. I just found this stuff called VH Essentials at Walgreens its homiapathic and I am on my 3rd day of the vaginal inserts. It seems to be working. Another thing that I might suggest that helps with my husband and I. My Husband is not circumsized, so I make him wash it with cetaphil before we have sex. Honestly that seems to help. Kind a wierd to talk about but we have tried everything since we are TTC.

  38. Jesssica on October 6th, 2011 2:41 am

I have been dealing w/ constant bv/yeast infections for over 3 yrs. I am in so much pain and feel so disgusting. I’ve been to several dr’s who give me the same meds that do not work! It is causing depression, trouble in my marriage. I honestly don’t know what else to do..

  39. Alicia on October 7th, 2011 11:33 am

After having consistent sex w/one sex partner was when I got BV. I got antibiotics & w/a month or 2 it came back. I was afraid to call the doctor again so I’ve done vinegar douche, medicated douche (helps for a while) taking all sorts of vitamins & changing my diet & nada. Even stopped having sex w/this person & I still get it. My next option is trying a colonic at a wellness spa. They stick a tube up your colon & shoot filtered water up while a clear tube sucks out any remaining waste & is cleans out all of the bad bacteria out of your system. Like a rooto-rooter for you intestines. Not only does it detoxify but helps with symptoms such as acne, blood pressure, chronic yeast infections. You also lose weight. I know it doesn’t sound exciting but I don’t care at this point. I just googled the best business that new what they were talking about & what they do specifically. Find on that you are comfortable with. I’ll let you know what happens. Oh some do recommend to juice a couple days prior to the treatment

  40. kesha on October 11th, 2011 12:00 pm

Ive been going thru the same for about 10 yrs off and on and it all started with my sons father who was not circumsized! This is really driving me crazy! I havent tried everything but 800mg Folic acid, acidophilus and douching with hydrogen peroxide which cured it for about a month. Now before I have sex I have to douche with 1/2 water 1/2 peroxide which gets rid of the smell for about 2 days. Flagyl is not for me because it is useless!! Its time that they start researching a cure because this is terrible!

  41. help with bv on October 12th, 2011 10:32 am

I have suffered from bv since I started my period over 8 yrs ago. I have always been very embarrassed by it, but I thought I was the only one who had this problem so I ignored it for a long time. This summer I finally decided enough was enough n my obgyn gave me flagyl, I took it n it made it better but didn’t clear and my family doctor gave me another round of flagyl n it still didn’t help so my obgyn gave me the vaginal stuff, I just dnt think I’m brave enough to use it. I was wonderin if anyone else has used it, n did it help, what was it like to use it….just scared. But I feel a lil better knowing that I’m not alone, like I thought I was!

  42. help with bv on October 12th, 2011 10:40 am

Angel, I get severe pain during sex, there again I just kind of ignored it, thought that was how it was suppose to be. But the pain seems to get worse after each time I have sex, even though it is not that often

  43. Tammy on October 13th, 2011 6:27 pm

Instead of doctors blowing it off as BV didn’t really that serious, I wish they find a CURE not just treatments. Its ruining my life. I didn’t know that BV affected so many other women. I’m thinking about possibly starting a walk-a-thon and/Or charity to find a cure for this horrible incurable infection called Bacterial Vaginosis. WE HAVE TO HELP TO FIND A CURE!
Is anybody with me? Or am I alone?….we can fight for a CURE but it will take more than one person. Its a bit embarrassing, but at this point I would do anything to be a normal, confident woman.

  44. jamey on October 20th, 2011 12:19 am

Got my first bv infection when I was pregnant with my first child in 1996. Swear I feel like I’ve had bv for 15yrs. Metronidazole masks symptoms for about a wk but several things bring it back or make it worse. These are my culprits. Any kind of sexual contact oral manual. Cant use any kind of condoms. I swear some mens semen flares it up too. Can’t use tampons. My periods bring it back in full force. Its so annoying we need a cure asap! My gyno’s all tell me some women are more prone and we are gonna have to deal with bv for the rest of our lives. Read everyones comments and ima try to take better care of myself including diet and alcohol maybe exercise and get more rest. Hoping this will work like it has for several of u. Thanx for all the great advice!!

  45. TImeka on October 25th, 2011 10:19 am

I have been fighting BV since 98 after a pregnancy that caused some blood clots and then chronic pneumonia and subsequent antibiotic use. I have been to so many doctors that I am just over the whole process as no one has any real answers. I have eaten the yogurt, taken oil of oregano, garlic, caprillyic acid and acidophilus. None of this has kept an infection gone for more than a couple of weeks. I find that it comes back with sex primarily, and after my periods. I have however abstained from sex for long periods of time and at least once a month it still flares up. I have found that juicing cabbage, parsley, and watercress will eliminate the odor and dicharge within a day which helps but I just want it to be over. Ive done the metrogel and flagyl. Nothing keeps it away. Since I have been married for the last 16 years and he has been checked without any evidence of bacterial infections, I don’t know what else will help at this point.

Im only 18 years old. I first noticed the unpleasant odor and large amounts of unusual discharge about 2 months ago. I went to the gyno just to see what was going on and she told me i probably had Bv. She had me use the vaginal cream and then once all my test results came back i did have bv, she also told me I had high-risk hpv and had lsil abnormal cells on my pap smear. Since then iv also taken oral antibiotics which only helped the bv for a short amount of time. I am worried the bv is going to affect my chances of helping the hpv. To find a way to rid myself of the bv would honestly make things so much easier. I heard that with a good immune system your body can supress the hpv and most lsil cells will go back to normal. I think I am going to see a natural doctor and continue to take my vitamins to see if i can boost the immune system to help with both. I would do anything to feel like a normal teenager again, but for now I’m just hoping and praying. I know we all wish there was a cure for it. God bless you all

I’m also very frustrated with this. I’m pretty sure I’m “allergic” to my husband but my doctor is not at all helpful. Amoxicillan helps but I don’t have insurance so appointments and meds are expensive. The only thing that helps is PEROXIDE! You basically douche with 1/2 and 1/2 warm water and peroxide. Try to keep it in for as long as possible then rinse with clean water. A total inconvenience but it’s the only treatment that’s worked for me.

I will double check and post more up to date info tomorrow or so this week. I will def start Vit D slowly in my routine.

I asked my doc was there a connection to the surgery and was told “NO”. Neither of us had bv issues prior to the surgery. VERY VERY FRUSTRATING!!!!!

Wow, ladies I can so relate to your experiences. I have the same symptoms and never seem to feel fresh no matter how many baths I take. Dory, can you tell us where to buy the products. Please send the link. Do you get it from a health food store?

  56. dri on December 20th, 2011 4:09 am

Hey ladies, I’m 20 & I am also a victim of the rediculous bacterial vaginosis :(. I’ve had it for around 2 years and it’s horrible. I have to change my pantyliners at least 5 times a day because of the discharge. I’ve been put on flagyl and metridozole multiple times, but they never work! Taking flagyl is horrible! I just wish I could get rid of this infection! It’s very inconvinent when I start itching while i’m at work or out somewhere. I feel like I have to hurry to the restroom to take care of it. It’s also embarassing when my partner is trying to touch me down there and I move his hand because i’m afraid he will touch the discharge. Also, something I noticed is while having sex, I am EXTREMELY wet. I don’t know if that is a side effect. Please, if anyone else is or has experienced the extra wetness during sex, let me know if it’s because of the BV or something else. My doctor told me that some women just live with BV, and I guess i’m one of them. So I don’t see the point in taking any other medication if it’s just going to come back again. Please contact me at if you have any tips or suggestions. Thanks & it’s good to find people who are experiencing the same thing you are.

  58. bubbles on December 28th, 2011 1:15 pm

Ok….I have had BV in the past when I was younger. It always was just an isolated situation that was very easily cured with Flagyl….
HOWEVER, I am now battling with this crap since June of this year (6 months now). I have had alllll sorts of treatment and it just keeps coming back. Unfortunately, I don’t remember what happened back in June because I was sooo intoxicated and my old neighbor took advantage of me. I freaked out and went and got tested when I noticed a discharge and yucky odor. I was terrified that it was some horrible STD. The docs said I was fine (other than “some bacteria and yeast”)…..I will say that I have managed to get it “under control” with minimal symptoms but not really because of anything the doctors did.
I am not sexually active. I am a 30 yo white woman who had a complete hysterectomy about 7 years ago (because of HORRIBLE endometriosis). I can’t believe how this has all happened to me. I usually itch every single night (even if it is minimal it is TERRIBLE….it feels like a slight tickle or crawling sensation, even) I, also, get the air bubbles throughout each day -which is extremely annoying. The odor has not been a fishy one, however. It smells like a really awful sour smell -gross!
As of right now, I have been using the Estradiol suppositories at night and that seemed to cut the odor out…and reduce the itching.

Rainy, how are you doing at this point with your symptoms? Thank you for sharing your info with us all….

I too have BV I think I left a comment here l last year, all I want to do is cry, what is this? It has been 7 years,I douched too much because I caught a std and I felt dirty, and when i had sex again booom there was bv, I never in my life heard of this, Im ashamed and embarassed,I do not know what to do, i been to the doctor 6 times and same old anti biotics,Im crying now as a type, i used to be confident and sexy and now I feel like a nasty dirty woman,I feel suicidal at times, Im just being honest, ppl smell me I know, because I smell myself,I tried everything,I did the boric acid sup, that helped a bit, but it is expensive!!new years eve is tonight, Im gonna start the new year different, diet, no sugar, which feeds bacteria, I feel so paranoid, like a crazy woman, this is insane, I feel all your pain, Im a nice person such as all of u may be, and I do not want to be judged by vaginal odor,I met a great guy and I can’t even be with him because of this:((( we decided to be friends, men don’t want a smelly woman, I feel Like I died 7 years ago,2012 gonna be 8 years with this??? ugh enough!!! I have to go now, all I want to do it cry…

  60. So Sad about BV on January 1st, 2012 2:27 pm

    Hello Beautiful Ladies:

First and Foremost, you are not dirty! I too for the past year and a half have been suffering off and on with BV. It seemed as though just before my 40th bday I began this embarrassing journey. The first time I went to Planned Parenthood because I was too embarrassed to go to my doctor. PP gave me a course of antibiotics, which did help for a few months, but returned. Also tried a vaginal cream called Metronidazole prescribed by my doctor when the other didn’t work. This also helped for a few months only to return again. I tried peroxide douches, probiotics: oral and vaginal, tried inserting plain, low sugar yogurt via tampon – what a mess, also tried the VH Essentials. All of these took the odor away temporarily, which was great at the time.

Wanted to let you know about this study with timed-release vitamin C capsules. Please check out this link:

From what I found, over in the UK, they are selling 250mg of timed-release vitamin C to insert vaginally to change the pH from alkaline to acidic. Check out this link:

Six months ago I could only find Solaray 500mg timed-release capsules, so when I have a fishy odor problem, (especially when my period is ending I smell like a bloody fish – oh, how horrible!) I insert one before bedtime for approximately 3 nights in a row and it would take care of the smelly problem. On some ocassions the vitamin C would burn, but I certainly didn’t care.

Please see the above websites and give it a try. I also wish that I were a microbiologist so that I could find a cure. I don’t want to go through this and I certainly do not want any other woman to suffer with this! We women have self-esteem issues as it is and this only compounds the problem. I too cry about it! Let’s just pray that a permanent cure is found. My personal opinion is that homones play a role in facilitating the breakdown of the pH. Who knows it could be the chemicals we eat and that are in plastic food containers and water bottles, which are endocrine disrupters, too much sugars, and genetically modified foods that are major contributors.

Good Luck and God Bless You All!

  61. Amanda on January 5th, 2012 10:23 pm

I have had the same partner since 2000. BV didn’t creep up on us until 2009. I have read so much on the internet and it had me wondering what changed in 2009 that could have brought this on. Then I recalled my partner drinking creatine and a lot of it which concerned me. +If creatine is amino acid converted into creatine phosphate aka phosphocreatine aka PCr (Pcr) which carries 3 amino acids and amino is aka amines which are alkaline bases (High Alkaline=High PH= BV) which counteract acid in vagina which is found in semen.+(All of which I read on Wikpedia) Could his sudden creatine intake in 2009 essentially be the cause? IDK. We didn’t have problems until then and that was the only change. I am confident it is something in his sperm. BV only comes back when I have vaginal contact with his sperm.

  62. Amanda on January 5th, 2012 10:35 pm

Sorry I meant semen when I said sperm. I’m just fed up and frustrated. This can drive a person crazy! Thank you to all who shared :) I did feel like the only person on this planet with the problem! Reading all the comments made me feel a little bit more normal. Even though I told my doctor that I had the same partner, she did look at me like I was lying by the third trip for Metronizole. That in itself makes me not want to ever have sex again just so I never have to see that look again. Ya know?

  63. Laura on January 7th, 2012 1:01 am

I find some sort of comfort in knowing I’m not the only one! I’m on my 5th BV infection in the last 6 months. I have never had any issues “down there” prior to this. Nothing in my life changed to explain this. My Dr. told me I could be sensitive to my husband’s bacteria, but other than that they have notbeen able to give me any other explination. And that really doesnt make any sence….why after 6 years would now it start to be an issue. (my husband is completly faithful so it’s not that either)I can’t stand it!!! Its embarassing and depressive! I sit at my desk at work and can smell myself and I’m constantley worried that others can also. It’s definatley cut into my sex life. Who can get turned on when you’re so self conscience? I’d really like to experiance oral sex again too!!! My husband has been so supporative durring this but it’s been really hard on me. I just want it to go away and things to go back to normal!!!

  64. rn bri on January 23rd, 2012 12:41 am

hi ladies i am 22yrs since about 16yrs i have been struggling with vaginal issues.i became sexually active at a very young age also so i fot that was the cause but i would have more been at risk for HPV instead not BV.Initially at age 16 it began as simple yeasts infection which i would just treat with over the counter antibiotic pessaries. Now for the past five yrs it has been consistent. My symptoms sometimes include an alkalinic or fishy odor, itching, burning, pain during intercourse, creaming thick white discharge in panty or post sexual intercourse.Use to be every 6 months, then 3,now every month post or pre menstruation. I have given up.It’s totally sickening. Being an RN i know some of the treatment taken. I changed my diet, i started using less jean, tites panty-hoses,more cotton panties, more showers, more h2o intake, use of condoms, no perfumed liner or pads, but more liners esp if panties are nylon, warm sitz baths esp when itching began.I even got my boyfriend applying topical hydrocortisone cream.Though some gyne say its not transmitted from partner. Also i use to do douches once a month even vaginal irrigation with warm water or a Little vinegar added, this went away for 2days, it also soothes and then returns. For 2yrs now nearly every 2wks to a month i take flagyl for 7 days or a one dose of 2 grams once i start feeling different,it went away then returns 2wks after. This is very embarrassing,i am a nurse i am supposed to be considered clean, but BV is not reflecting this at all.I am kinda comfortable with my BF because we discuss this alot so he is supportive. Now i recently saw a obgyn and prescribed gynatrun ovules and miconazole crean so i am waitin to c the results.hope it works better. Constant oral antibiotic use may definately make u eventually be resistant to it and that’s what i am, totally resistant cuz i have been so crazy tryna get read of the symptoms. But the main treatment i think is doing things to normalize the vaginal ph. If there is sometime things that works more i will be happy to know. This infection is one that can ruin one’s self esteem and relationship.

I am also one of these women. I have been dealing with this since 2005, when I got my first IUD put in place. Igor it removed after 2 years of non stop problems. Then 8 months later with no symptoms my doc pressured me into getting another IUD placed. Two more years of non stop problems …

Even found a post my boyfriend put on yahoo answers about how I do anything for him sexually, and he wants to go down on me but can’t bare to do it because of my horrible smell. You know how embarrassing that was? And he had no idea what I was going thru because neither one of us was willing to talk about it. I’m afraid he’s going to get tired of it and leave me or cheat on me because of this problem.

I got my 2nd iud removed this past December and am now on a combination birth control pill. I don’t have discharge like I used to but I still smell it sometimes. It seems to get better after a period, not sure if its just because its like an internal flush.

I’ve also stopped drinking red bull, dark sodas, limited fast food, and eat yogurt and citrusy fruits which
seems to have made it alittle better.

I’m at a loss on what else to do. Everyday I go to work (very active job) and I wreak. I run everyday at the gym and I smell it too. I’m showering twice a day. Its not like I’m taking a back seat in all of this. I just wish I could talk to my boyfriend about it.

Hi guys, I have all the symptoms. Discharge, smell, pelvic pain, bubble in my vajayjay, u name it Ive had it. The thing that helps me the most is using straight 3% peroxide douche. Depending on how bad the infection it will burn at first, but once you have done it twice a day for a few days the burning will stop. Take acidolphilius (sp) 4bil a day. This is a on going battle but be encouraged, this fight is not over.

Hello ladies, I’ve been suffering from bv for what seems like forever. Back in the 90s, I suffered from really bad yeast infections- so bad that my dr told me to use medicated douches.

I’ve taken every pill/cream under the sun. I think I’ve pin pointed the cause of my bv. Somewhere along the way, I developed an allergic reaction to latex condoms. If I have sex w/ latex condoms, less than a week I’ll have bv. Also, if my partner Is performing oral sex, his mouth has to be very clean. No food particles or anything.
I’m currently suffering from bv right now because I just realized that oral sex causes my bv. So it’s either back to the dr or I’ll try some of the things you ladies suggested.

  70. dijj on March 29th, 2012 10:08 am

i had the same problem for a while after i got an iud. antibiotics didn’t work. my doctor gave me a paper that said to mix 1/2 hydrogen peroxide with 1/2 water, dip your fingers in it then push two fingers high into your vagina. do it repeatedly over several minutes. you do this every few days, after fooling around, and during the last two days of your cycle. take folic acid and lactobacillus acidophilus pills and time-released vitamin c for your immune system daily with a meal (but not all at once. it made me sick to do that. split them up during the day). this cured me within a week! i still do it to prevent. it also said you could follow the hydrogen peroxide douche with doing the same thing with 1 tbsp yogurt mixed in one cup of water, but I didn’t have to do this. you shouldn’t use commercial douches or anything that squirts stuff into you (unless your doctor tells you), not even the ph-balanced kind, because they push the infection further in and make it harder to get rid of. i know it is tempting because common sense tells you you should be able to wash it away, but it’s not true. good luck. hope this helps someone!

Hello, sorry to hear that you are all dealing with BV like me. I have a few tips I’d like to share that may help you. A nurse/midwife once told me that some of us women encounter a pH change at some point in our life and makes us very susceptible to BV. She recommended not wearing thongs, no tight pants, sleep with no panties on, wash your panties in dye-free, frangrance-free detergent, no baths (unless you do an apple cider vinegar soak. And limit your sugar. My gyn gave me a Rx for boric acid suppositories, they are about $20 for 30 and you insert them 2x a week at bedtime. They really do help, and the cost isn’t bad considering they last for 15 wks. They have helped so much; if I was more consistent with some of the other things, I’d probably be ok! Good luck to you all.

D I have suffered from bv and yeast infections for many years as well I was prescribed a cream but it returned I was diagnosed with fibroid last year and have had to deal with heavy periods and now this year more pain and more bleeding and I purchased the nutribullet and it helped my pain and bleeding making healthy juices such as kale spinach banana flax seed and water but now the infections are back and its even more irritating I’m so tired of it and its embarrassing I’m thinking of trying a holistic practioner as western medicine doesn’t seem to help .

  77. AB on October 9th, 2012 9:10 pm

I have suffered with BV off and on for the last 4 years or so. It became a problem after I had an uterine ablation (burned the lining of my uterus) but the gyn said it was not related. The problem I see with that is I no longer have normal periods and the blood I do have kind of just sits up there for awhile so it would make sense that my husbands semen would just sit up there too since there’s nothing to “flush” it out in the way of a period. I have of course been on flagyl and metro gel which gets rid of it until we have sex again and within a month it’s back. I sis find one posters comment interesting about maybe his semen plays a part because I’ve gotten a lot more since I’ve been with my husband. I do a lot better when I take a good acidopholus which usually runs 15-25 bucks for 30-60 pills but I take 3 or 4 a day. I have been to the doctor and gyn several times and of course they say it’s not related to the uterine ablation but I disagree. Since they don’t think it’s related they don’t do anything other than prescribe another antibiotic.

Unfortunately I have now been diagnosed with IBS because of all the antibiotics I’ve taken over the years. I think the only true fix that any of us will ever find is to completely change our eating and exercising habits combined with herbal supplements. We as a society consume way too much sugars, fats, carbs, processed and hormone enriched foods that obviously screw up our entire systems. Doctors wont come up with a cure for BV because it’s not important to the medical community. If they can temporarily fix the problem and it’s not an epidemic that affects the masses then it’s going to be brushed aside and we will be told that it’s just us and that there’s nothing we can do about it. The only real cure will have to come from us personally. We will have to change our diets and eat fruits, vegetables, lean meats and fish. We have to eliminate processed chemically treated foods and drinks. Up our intake of water and stop drinking soda, artificial energy drinks and juices. There’s no way we wont have numerous health problems with all of the bad things that we consume and are exposed to. And I just want to say to the women that have posted about being embarrassed and ridiculed and cheated on by their husbands and boyfriends, they are not good people if they do those things. I am totally grossed out when I have a flare up of BV and feel disgusting about my body for betraying me but my husband totally understands and knows that its not my fault and he would never treat me differently because of it. All he ever says is oh you must be getting an infection again. Do not accept that treatment from anyone. Thats horse s***!!!!! If they truely love you they will support you and understand that it’s more horrible for you than it is for them and they should be compassionate and caring!!!!! If they aren’t then they didn’t care about you in the first place and you should get rid of them. Good luck to everyone and hopefully someday we will find a easy fix. Until then we’ll just keep on trying!!!

    Hello Ladies!
I have delt with BV for almost 5 years! 3 of the 5 years I just quit trying to stop it. Until now I am calling the gyno every month for a new Flagyl perscription. I feel dirty all the time and embarrased to go to the pharmacy to get my pills. I don’t even want to have sex! Online it says one of the big causes of BV is new or MULTI sex partners!!! are you kidding me! I have been with the same guy for 6 years!! The bad thing that he has now researched BV online and has read this and now thinks that i am cheating on him! my heart breaks every time i tell him that i smell again! My Gyno just keeps giving me flagyl. First she said maybe its from thong undies. then it was cuz i use tampons on lite days. but every month i have to take pills cuz of the fish odor and smell. oh the smell could knock a person out! The discharge is so bad sometimes that I have to change my clothes! We need help and cure for BV!

  79. Julia on November 29th, 2012 9:26 pm

I have had BV for almost 13 years! I don’t know what it’s like not to have it. I have only had 3 sex partners in my whole life, one of whom is my husband of seven years. I actually got BV before I ever have sex when I was a teenager! I basically live on antibiotics and have to suffer for long periods of time without antibiotics so I don’t get immune to them. The odor it’s too bad, but the pelvic pain is horrible, and the discharge is irritating. I go through panty liners like water, and can never stay dry. All of this infection had caused endometriosis and so much inflammation in the tissues around my female organs. I also live on inflammatory meds. I’ve tried everything. I think the only thing you can do is keep a close relationship with you OBGYN.

    Hello Ladies!

I’m so glad that I found this forum. I am a chronic sufferer of BV and I’m surprised to see how many women suffer from this mentally debilitating problem. I contracted BV about 8 years ago and have spent years going to the gyno and being put on flagyll and metrodonizole gel. The gel is absolutely gross and I’ve found it to no longer be helpful. Recently I went to a European MD whom told me that they treat both the male and female in Europe to avoid cross contamination..which essentially seems like a great idea if there was a cure. The idea of constantly taking antibiotics is non-appealing to me. Against my better discernment I took her regimine of antibiotics and followed it up with probiotics. Its been 6 months and I am still suffering from this problem and the doctor refuses to talk to me on the phone.

I recently graduated school for alternative medicine and will do my best to find a solution. I want answers for myself and other women who suffer. I will say from my research efforts so far, coconut oil has been the best remedy. 7 days of virgin coconut oil inserted into the vagina helps get rid of symptoms. I also find that hormone shifts and sugar affect the bacteria. Flood the body with good nutrients and antioxidants. Glutathione is a great antioxidant. I’m also giving myself injections of b vitamins and C every 2 weeks. I’m testing my theories on myself and will post…anyone interested in trying please let me know your results.

Try Nystatin ointment. It must be prescribed by a physician and is normally used for yeast infections but can have great efficacy for BV.
