End Chronic and Recurrent Bacterial Vaginosis

In today’s world, nothing really compares to life being lived to its fullest with no worries, no doubts, no problems. Every woman can honestly admit to themselves that one of the most important things to them is to stay beautiful, look vibrant, and especially to maintain their body clean and fresh. One of the most important considerations women care for is their vaginal sanitation.

Unfortunately, sudden changes may occur in a woman’s response to natural changes of their bodies. Even though a woman may practice good hygiene, along the way there may be some unforeseen circumstances. This is could be an infection, disease or bacteria build up.

Almost one third of women today are experiencing chronic or recurrent bacterial vaginosis (BV). BV is an infection caused by the imbalance build up of harmful bacteria outnumbering the good ones inside the vagina of woman. A woman may recognize having BV if she experiences:

  • Vaginal discharge with an unpleasant “fishy” odor, which can be more obnoxious after sexual intercourse
  • Grayish, yellowish or whitish discarghe
  • Vaginal itching
  • Burning sensation when urinating

The good news is there are treatments for recurrent bacterial vaginosis. Since in most cases it is a continual infection, doctors prescribe antibiotics. They may even give creams to apply inside the vagina or pills to be taken as oral meds.

More preferred, if you are a woman experiencing BV, and have been tired of the chronic effect antibiotics bring, you may consider trying natural home remedies. Most women have found them to be very effective. Most natural or home remedies include:

  • Inclusion of fresh intakes including fruits vegetables, grains, fresh water and fax seed
  • A warm bath added with a few drops of pure apple cider vinegar to relieve itching and inflammation
  • Avoiding too much sugar and caffeine intake
  • Natural ingestion of good bacteria like acidophilus
  • To promote healing, application of tea tree oil, golden seal and calendula on the vaginal surface
  • Garlic has natural antiseptics, so it can be taken in consideration
  • As much as possible, restrict using any perfumed products

There are many more home remedies you might try, including a step by step home remedy program that targets the root cause of BV from which 1000s of women have found relief. To review this home treatment program, Click Here. Bacterial vaginosis is not a permanent infection, it can be cured provided that women who experience this infection invest their time and effort to make things well. Natural remedies can prevent the continual occurrence of BV.

What I am confused about is that my doctor said I had “too much good bacteria”…so I dont know if this is truly BV. This is honestly killing my self esteem what with the excessive discharge (whitish), the smell/taste of lemons/sour/tangy…I’ve tried home remedies, Ive tried medications and nothing works. I cry about this all the time, I can’t seem to make it end and I cant find anyone else with the same problem.

  2. Mel on December 23rd, 2009 6:20 pm

I have had the same problem. I have symptoms of BV and have taken over 8 medications and I can’t get rid of it. I have eaten garlic and many other things. i know what you are going through, rachel.

Can any one advise

  5. Vicky on January 25th, 2010 6:01 pm

I’ve been dealing with this for a full year now and the antibiotics worked but it came back every time. Recently the only thing that stops it (symptoms) is 4 (400mg) Folic acid & 2 garlic (400mg) vitamins. I hate the fact that if i stop taking it it comes back… but i rather do the vitamins and not have to deal with the embarrassing symptoms. If anyone else finds a way to get rid of this PLEASE post it on here!

I’ve been suffering from bv off and on for four years. Its awful and it seems nothing will cure it. I’ve spent uncountable amount of money on prescribed antibiotics and herbal remedies. I was bv free for almost a year it seemed to go away on its own but unfortunately its back. I had no idea so many women suffered from this ongoing problem.

  7. Sandy on April 16th, 2010 11:58 pm

What i want to know is if there is a way to cure my husband so i don’t get it anymore. my dr. said he was the cause of it and his dr’s cant find anything wrong with him hes faithful and honest and now is scared to be intimate with me because of it… i feel so bad..

I have suffered from BV for a few years, and I kind of sensed something was wrong down there but thought it was normal for a women to have the fishy smell and discharge. until my doctor called and said i had BV and prescribed Flagyl which worked within 2 days. I wanted home remedies so that i can continue to use, and started taking Probiotic ACIDOPHILUS supplements once a day (1Billion mcg) from walmart and the smell n dischargew is gone!!!! It has been almost a month now and i feel so happy and no longer ashamed of having sex. Now i can do it anytime anywhere!!! Try it…P.S i will keep updated!!!

I’ve been suffering from this I would say for the last 3 yrs.I can’t get rid of it!!!!! When the doctor gave ,me metridozole the first time around I thought I was done with it,But then it came back In about a month or two. Now I deal with this on a constant bases, It is ruining my sex life, I feel in some ways depressing me, I cry in the doctors office because I really don’t think they really care and with all the presciptions given to me I believe I should have been rid of this long ago, It just Makes no sense!!! I’ve been reading all sorts of posts and forms and this seems to be a very big problem, Many women are suffering from this with no relief.

  10. Amanda on December 4th, 2010 7:36 am

i am also suffering from BV. 3times in the last 6 months. i hate it, i am embarrassed, and its uncomfortable. do any of you suffering from this have the sensation of air bubbles in your vagina? i have another appointment in the AM i am hoping to cure it. my husband has been amazing in helping me deal with this, for that i am greatful, even though i am so embarrassed.

  11. jennifer on December 30th, 2010 9:32 am

I have had BV for years too, and I just thought I was the only one who had it for that long. I have tried the pills and it goes away for a few months and then its back. You can smell it through my pants at times, how embarrassing. I don’t know what to do.

  12. Misunderstood on February 6th, 2011 11:39 am

I’ve been struggling for about 2 yrs with this. I’m at a lost of what to do and SO tired of putting my feet in those damned stirrups! I feel ugly dirty and very confused. Over the years i’ve learned things that managed my symptoms but nothing to ever fully cure it. I’ve just finished a round of tindimax, which i told was the best to take, and that STILL didn’t resolve my BV problems. I feel as if im curse and will be stuck like this for the rest of my life. I’m tired of crying at night and feeling like i’ll never be normal or happy. I can’t talk to no one cause they think i obsess and i worry too much. But who the hell is gonna care if i don’t? I just don’t know anymore. I’m at the end of my ropes and just feel like giving up….

  13. Jessica on April 20th, 2011 6:56 am

I thought I was alone also..I can’t seem to get rid of it either. I was diagnosed with HPV about a year ago and I’ve been suffering from it on and off since then. I Google chronic BV and this lady Dr. Has this book she wrote about her problems she was having from it. She said for her, eating yogurt and eating 3 pods of garlic every day got rid of it. The garlic is an antifungal I guess. I’ve been trying to eat yogurt everyday and inserting that cream they prescribe and no matter what it keeps coming back. All my careless Dr can say is that its not going to go away. I can’t live like this. It’s affecting my boyfriend also. Sometimes I cry because I feel disgusting and hopeless. I can also smell it through my pants….somebody help us!!!!!!!

  14. Bobbi on May 18th, 2011 2:25 pm

Going on over 20 years dealing w/ BV. Tried countless prescriptions and home remedies. Depression and anxiety, no t a day goes by without thinking/ worrying about it. No spontaneous sex. The only thing that has brought any relief in the last few years, although can be a bit expensive and must be used consistently is a product you can get over the counter called RepHresh. Other brands as well, Luvena is one I’ve used. They are a vaginal/ lubricating gel, some w/ probiotics which help balance PH. My latest doctor says it’s just masking symptoms, I say I don’t care. I use it two to three times a week and as long as I’m consistent, keeps the odor and discharge at bay. First time in years I’ve had a somewhat normal sex life. I saw a show on TLC about women w/ allergic reactions to semen and thought perhaps that could be a contributor to the problem, but my Dr. Looked @ me like I was crazy. Sometimes it feels like people don’t understand the frusterations w/ chronic BV… Emotional & financial , and that you’re always searching for answers!!! Until recently, I thought I was the only one!

  15. Necey on June 24th, 2011 5:06 am

I thought I was the only one that has BV the way I do. I hate living like this. Its embrassing as hell. I just finished some all the meds thats supposed to make it go away but its back less than a week later. I’ve been dealing with this for 3 years now and it’s driving me insane.

  16. Shonda on July 31st, 2011 6:20 pm

I have been suffering with BV on and off for about 13 years now. I have truly tried EVERYTHING!!!!!!!! I only wear cotton underwear, I have tried numerous prescriptions to the tune of $180 just for my co-pay. I have tried yogurt, garlic, rephresh, probiotics, tea tree oil, treated my partner with prescriptions have used condoms, had an IUD inserted, had the IUD removed, NOTHING has worked!!!! I have gotten to a point where I don’t even try to treat it anymore. I constantly wear pantiliners and clean up before and after sex. My last hope is to purchase a book I saw online where a female who experienced chronic BV gives tips on how to get rid of it. The book is about $30 and comes with a money back guarantee. I wish I could go to a bookstore and purchase it rather than online. But $30 is still cheaper than the $35 co-pay I am charged everytime I see my OBGYN, not to mention the co-pays for prescriptions. I will check back after I get the book.

  17. Kira on August 24th, 2011 10:41 am

I have been dealing with this for about a year now. It seems to have started since I terminated a pregnancy but the doc says it isn’t related. I even recently went off the pill thinking that that was causing it. I didn’t have an infection for about 3 months…and today…again. Weird thing tho is I had NO symptoms, but then I went to the gym and jogged and stuff came out and now I have full symptoms…as if the jogging motion brought it on. This has caused absolute depression and anxiety and I’m SO tired of being told that they don’t know what’s causing it. My husband and I would like to try and have a baby soon but I hear BV causes miscarriage and/or low birth weight!! I def don’t wanna be on antibiotics while preggers. This whole thing stresses me out completely and although I’m glad I’m not alone, I’m frustrated there is so little research done on this!

  18. Lindsay on August 31st, 2011 6:45 am

I had a miscarriage 9 years ago and have been dealing with chronic BV ever since. Like most of you, I have tried everything and NOTHING works. Just like Shonda, i have basically stopped trying to treat it, because its hopeless. I have seen 9 different OB/GYNs..and no one has a clue. I have taken so much flagyl, that my body doesnt respond to it at all. the Rephresh product used to at least curb the symptoms for a few days, but now it doesnt help anymore either. i dont know what else to do and sometimes i feel my husband resents me..?

  19. precious on September 2nd, 2011 1:14 am

i’ve been all ova to different gyn”s till its to da point where i think im dillusional…or at least they make me feel like im fine …..but i dont feel fine…i stay away frm men…its starting to where im depressed i feel like its da end of da world for me….it sucks!!!!!i get air bubbles and a watery like discharge…man da odor is ridiculous…..i jus dont kno what to do anymore…..

  20. dory on September 3rd, 2011 10:12 pm

  21. dawny on September 8th, 2011 7:56 am

i have it too and my doctor said she wants me to use metrogel every 3-4 days and im just like wtf flagyl dont work and leaves a nasty metallic taste in my mouth, metrogel or “the cream” as yall call it is just the cock block from hell, like what am i supposed to do just use metrogel all the time till it dont work anymore and never have sex because i have that stupid nasty cream oozing out of me all the time??? i dont think so.. there has got to be another way theres got to. that smell is just gross i mean if i was a dude i wouldnt touch me with a 10 foot pole smelling like a freakin fish market in 100 degree weather. i feel like im being punished

  22. dory on September 9th, 2011 4:55 pm

Hi its me again and sorry I mistyped the dose of vitamin D the 1st time, it’s 4000 iu not mg. So I finally received my vitamin d3 and started taking 2000 iu twice a day along with garlic pills, d-mannose powder 1 tsp, folic acid 800 mcg twice a day, to be honest the discharge decreased and the smell got better but I can’t judge right now I need to confirm after a month. Try the vitamin D3 and put ur feedback here.

  23. Amanda on September 9th, 2011 6:53 pm

Hey everyone, I have also been suffering from bv (obvi or I wouldn’t be posting). Anyway, I’ve had feminine issues my ENTIRE life. It all started around 12. I am now 27. As far as bv is concerned, I’ve only started having issues with it the past 2 years. For me, I have a lot of weird symptoms some of which I haven’t heard a lot of people mention but the oddest thing is that typically I do not have the odor or lots of dicharge. Most people including my dr at first, would say it’s not bv. But every damn time I come back positive for bv. I’ve been to the doctor atleast 10 times over the past 2 years. I have just recently switched doctors and hoping she will actually have some answers. I do know a few things so far from watching my diet and my activities. It’s always worse in the summer do to the heat. If I party on the weekends and stay up late and don’t get much sleep… I notice symptoms the next day. I manage it myself for the most part now. LOTS of water, activia and NO soda products. I refuse to take flagyl or any of the medication anymore because it doesn’t help. It always comes back a week later. The ONLY thing that seemed to work was a vaginal cream called terconazole. This is a cream that is prescribed for yeast infections.. not bv. But my last doctor, on a whim, decided to prescribe it to me anyway because she had heard it sometimes works for bv. It worked so well I had her write me a prescription so I could have it just in case i had issues when I went to Paris/Germany for 2 weeks. And thank God she did because it hit me hardcore mid trip. Which was due to lack of sleep and such. Oh, and like anything else… Cigarettes bother it A LOT. I don’t smoke every day but I’m a social smoker. Anyway, I don’t know if this help at all but I figured I’d share.

  24. Amanda on September 9th, 2011 7:09 pm

Oh! And if your man is uncircumcised?? Yeah, forget having sex without a condom if you have problems with bv. My ex wasn’t circumcised which led to a great deal of my feminin issues including bv. Just wanted to throw that out there.

  25. rainy on September 10th, 2011 11:53 am

hi ladies i know how you all feel i am a bv sufferer also had it for a few yrs. tried everything tea tree oil, garlic peroxide douches, pills, its so freakin embarrasing i stay depress i try not to get close to people because i know if i can smell it i know people can especially when they rub their noses .i will not give up thta: why i am on the computer looking up homopathic cures for bv.

  26. Angel on September 11th, 2011 7:54 pm

I have had it almost constant for the last year and a half no one has given me any answers and the meds dont work. i used to feel so alone and it really has me depressed, but after reading everyone’s testimonies i don’t feel so alone anymore. But my question is do any of you get pain during sex because of it and sometimes get lower abdominal pain? I don’t itch or anything I just get the terrible odor that is super embarrassing.

  27. Amanda on September 12th, 2011 7:29 pm

@ Angel, I sometimes do get pain during sex. I also have had a lot of abdominal pain associated with it. Like I stated previously, I’ve only had the odor a few times and yes, it is super embarrassing. You would think with as many women that suffer from this that they would have some sort of answer for it. I refuse to take the meds anymore because they only seem to make it worse.

  28. Amanda on September 12th, 2011 7:46 pm

Things I know (so far) that make it worse for me:

    - anything tomato based (this is the #1 thing for me)
    - citrus
    - alcohol
    - cigarretes
    - sodas

  29. rainy on September 14th, 2011 9:04 am

  30. dory on September 16th, 2011 9:42 am

I got mine better in a matter of weeks using these:

    Vitamin 3D 2000 iu twice a day
Folic acid 800 mcg twice a day
    3 garlic pills
    D-mannose 1 tsp a day
    Acidopholis 3 times a day

    Try it!!

  31. Angel on September 24th, 2011 5:25 am

    Dory,
Do you still take all of that daily or just to get rid of it?

  32. Cori on September 28th, 2011 9:45 am

Hormonal imbalances can cause chronic yeast infections/bv. The doctors I was seeing – gynecologists and family doctor kept prescribing antibiotics – it only got worse – never-ending cycle. Finally I was healed through a wholistic gynecologist who put me on a two-week regimen of Diflucan (yeast killer) along with being on a yeast-free diet for 2 weeks. I also took a pro-biotic daily that she prescribed. After the two weeks on Diflucan, she did a blood test to check my hormones and found out I was in premenopause which can cause yeast infections. She gave me a wholistic and natural estrogen cleanse since my estrogen levels were too high along with natural progesterone cream from Metagenics. I was completely healed. Praise God!

  33. Kristin on September 29th, 2011 6:20 am

Has anyone tried AVC cream and taking an antibiotic?

  34. Julia on September 30th, 2011 7:32 am

I also have Chronic BV usually once a month. I am also TTC. I have tried Flagyl and tindamax.which works temporaly until I have sex again. I have also tried colloidal silver and that seems to work sometimes. I just found this stuff called VH Essentials at Walgreens its homiapathic and I am on my 3rd day of the vaginal inserts. It seems to be working. Another thing that I might suggest that helps with my husband and I. My Husband is not circumsized, so I make him wash it with cetaphil before we have sex. Honestly that seems to help. Kind a wierd to talk about but we have tried everything since we are TTC.

  35. Jesssica on October 6th, 2011 2:41 am

I have been dealing w/ constant bv/yeast infections for over 3 yrs. I am in so much pain and feel so disgusting. I’ve been to several dr’s who give me the same meds that do not work! It is causing depression, trouble in my marriage. I honestly don’t know what else to do..

  36. Alicia on October 7th, 2011 11:33 am

After having consistent sex w/one sex partner was when I got BV. I got antibiotics & w/a month or 2 it came back. I was afraid to call the doctor again so I’ve done vinegar douche, medicated douche (helps for a while) taking all sorts of vitamins & changing my diet & nada. Even stopped having sex w/this person & I still get it. My next option is trying a colonic at a wellness spa. They stick a tube up your colon & shoot filtered water up while a clear tube sucks out any remaining waste & is cleans out all of the bad bacteria out of your system. Like a rooto-rooter for you intestines. Not only does it detoxify but helps with symptoms such as acne, blood pressure, chronic yeast infections. You also lose weight. I know it doesn’t sound exciting but I don’t care at this point. I just googled the best business that new what they were talking about & what they do specifically. Find on that you are comfortable with. I’ll let you know what happens. Oh some do recommend to juice a couple days prior to the treatment

  37. help with bv on October 12th, 2011 10:32 am

I have suffered from bv since I started my period over 8 yrs ago. I have always been very embarrassed by it, but I thought I was the only one who had this problem so I ignored it for a long time. This summer I finally decided enough was enough n my obgyn gave me flagyl, I took it n it made it better but didn’t clear and my family doctor gave me another round of flagyl n it still didn’t help so my obgyn gave me the vaginal stuff, I just dnt think I’m brave enough to use it. I was wonderin if anyone else has used it, n did it help, what was it like to use it….just scared. But I feel a lil better knowing that I’m not alone, like I thought I was!

  38. help with bv on October 12th, 2011 10:40 am

Angel, I get severe pain during sex, there again I just kind of ignored it, thought that was how it was suppose to be. But the pain seems to get worse after each time I have sex, even though it is not that often

  39. Tammy on October 13th, 2011 6:27 pm

Instead of doctors blowing it off as BV didn’t really that serious, I wish they find a CURE not just treatments. Its ruining my life. I didn’t know that BV affected so many other women. I’m thinking about possibly starting a walk-a-thon and/Or charity to find a cure for this horrible incurable infection called Bacterial Vaginosis. WE HAVE TO HELP TO FIND A CURE!
Is anybody with me? Or am I alone?….we can fight for a CURE but it will take more than one person. Its a bit embarrassing, but at this point I would do anything to be a normal, confident woman.
